The problem: Airbnb hosts are concerned about noisy or partying guests disrupting the neighborhood, which could result in complaints, bad reviews, or even loss of income. At the same time, many guests unintentionally create noise issues, as they are often unaware of the disturbance they are causing.
Through interviews with Airbnb hosts and guests—and my own experiences staying in Airbnbs—I realized that the Airbnb app is central to host-guest communication. Hosts needed a non-confrontational way to address noise issues before they escalated and damaged relationships with neighbors, while guests preferred receiving updates through familiar channels.
I designed and pitched a feature that integrated Minut’s noise detection technology with Airbnb. By syncing with Airbnb’s booking calendar, the system could automatically send polite, automated messages to current guests via the Airbnb app whenever noise levels exceeded acceptable limits. This solution discreetly addressed noise concerns, preserved the guest experience, and provided measurable value for hosts.
This collaboration not only cemented Minut as the industry-leading short-term rental monitoring solution but also laid the foundation for additional features with Airbnb. These included notifications when a guest checked in, enabling hosts to provide home information and upsells, as well as checkout and cleaning coordination features.
